Business Continuity Solutions- a broad multi-product & highly cost service offering - unique to JBN
Business Continuity Planning is an interdisciplinary peer mentoring methodology used to create and
validate a practiced logistical plan for how an organisation will recover and restore partially or
completely interrupted critical functions within a pre-determined time after a disaster or extended disruption.
The logistical plan is named the BC Plan.
Several offerings from JBN namely UPS & Compatible Generators,Virtualisation software,Network Performance & Analysis tools,Web Filtering & general BC Consulting form part of a larger BC Plan. JBN's products & services are fully referenced & priced attractively across technologies. JBN would welcome the opportunity to assist your business or public authority in putting in place a robust BC Plan.
In plain language, BCP is how an organisation prepares for future incidents that could jeopardise the organisation's core mission and its long term health. Local incidents such as building fires, regional incidents such as earthquakes & national incidents such as pandemics all need to be addressed by the BCP.
BCP may be part of an organisational learning effort that helps reduce operational risk associated with lax information management controls. Recent examples are the UK HMRC 25million family data loss, DVLA driver license detail loss & that seeping out of several NHS Trusts. JBN technologies positively contribute to building a strong, robust BCP- capable of dealing with many contingencies.
In December 2006, the British Standards Institute released the new independent standard for BCP- the BS25999. JBN technologies assist in striving to achieve this highly reputable standard.
Impact Analysis
Recovery requirements consist of the following information-
- The time frame in which the critical function must be resumed after disaster
- The business requirements for recovery of the critical functions
- The technical requirement for recovery of the critical functions
Threat Analysis
Common threats include-
Disease / Earthquakes / Fire / Flood / Cyber Attack / Bribery / Cyclones / Utility Outage. JBN technology can assist directly in these key areas.
Recovery requirement Documentation
After completion of the analysis phase, the business & technical requirements are documented in order to commence the implementation phase. A good asset management programme can be of great assistance here & allow for quick identification of available & re-allocatable resources. For an office based, IT intensive business, the plan requirements may cover the following elements which can be classified as ICE(In Case of Emergency) Data-
- The numbers and types of desks, whether dedicated or shared, required outside of the primary business location and in the secondary location
- The individuals involved in the recovery effort along with the contact & technical details
- The applications & data required from the secondary location allowing for critical business functions
- The maximum outage allowed for the critical applications
- The peripheral requirements like printers, copiers, fax machines etc
Solution Design
The goal of the solution design phase is to identify the most effective disaster recovery solution- also JBN's approach- that meets two main requirements from the impact analysis stage. For IT applications this is commonly expressed as-
- The minimum application & application data requirements
- The timeframe in which the minimum application & data must be available
Disaster Recovery plans may be required outside the IT applications domain. The solution phase determines-
- The crisis command structure
- The location of a secondary work site if necessary
- Telecommunication architecture between primary & secondary sites
- The application & software required at the second worksite
- The type of physical data requirements at the secondary worksite
Maintenance
Information update & testing of -
- Staffing changes
- Changes to important clients/vendors & their contact details
- Departmental changes
Testing & verification of technical solutions-
- Virus definition distribution
- Application security & service patch distribution
- Hardware useability check
- Application useability check
- Data verification
Testing & verification of organisational recovery procedure
- Are all work processes for critical functions documented?
- Have the systems used in the execution of critical functions changed?
- Are the documented work process recovery tasks & supporting disaster recovery infrastructure allowing staff to recover within the predetermined recovery time objective?
